Vacation - Boston

After several days in Maine, we made it back to Boston, turned in our car and spent the rest of our time there. Our hotel was in downtown Boston, so we walked or rode the subway wherever we wanted to go.

We walked the 2 1/2 mile Freedom Trail and saw all of the historical landmarks along the way. Below is the Old State House (where the Declaration of Independence was proclaimed from the balcony and the Boston Massacre took place outside of), an old cobblestone street, the Bunker Hill monument and the view from the top of it and Quincy Market, which is now full of lots of yummy food vendors.
The two things I probably enjoyed the most along the trail were the cemeteries (we saw lots of very old headstones dating back to the 1600's) and the churches. Below is the Old North Church where they hung the lanterns in the window to warn them the British were coming ("one if by land, two if by sea").

The pew boxes in the churches fascinated me. They were little boxes with doors on them and seating inside. Families could purchase their "box" for a year at a time. The closer you were to the front and center, the more it cost. The most expensive were about $25,000 for a year. That's a lot of money in those days!

We had to go see Fenway Park while we were there. I wish we could've seen a game, but the Red Sox were out of town.

We spent lots of time walking around the city enjoying the cooler temperatures! We had a great time with each other and definitely enjoyed the break from everyday life. If you enjoy history, Boston's a great place to visit!
